Beeld reported that Gianfranco Cicogna Mozzoni, 49, died in front of thousands of people who had come to see the air show.
One eyewitness said the plane was flying low and seemed to tilt to one side. “The next moment there was just smoke and flames!”
An elderly woman who saw the accident had a heart attack and was taken to hospital. She was in a stable condition.
“It is an incredibly awful thing,” said Barbara Botha, who stood nearby and saw everything.
“Everyone saw it. Everyone, including my children, are in a state”.
Mozzoni flew in formation with Charles Urban when the accident happened.
Urban said afterwards that his friend had died doing what he loved. “There was an incredible passion for flying in him.”
Mozzoni’s wife was seen on the scene shortly after the accident, slowly walking around the crashed plane, stopping to pick up and look at bits of the wreckage. The couple had two children who were not at the air show.
